Philo was the son of Elias and Hannah Clark Beardsley. He was born February 13, 1797 in Newtown, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He married Mehitabel Beardsley, daughter of Eli Beardsley and Rhoda French, around 1816. She was the mother of all his children. After Mehitable died in 1843, he married Sophia Shelton (1805 - 1877). Philo and both of his wives are buried in the North Settlement Cemetery in Catherine, Schuyler County, New York.
