An outdoors-man at heart -- he power-boated, fished, hunted and was rated an expert marksman.

As a motorcycle officer purchased a dump truck and worked a second job hauling dirt to support his family.
Without a college degree he created a financial inventory strategy for the Washington D.C. Police department that would allow anyone at anytime to view the budget figures.
Became the Chief Financial Officer of the DC. Police Department. As D.C. was run by Congress, Ashely reported directly to Congress.
One day while walking down the street in DC with a friend, he laid eyes upon a beautiful young girl, Marjorie, he didn't even know her name but said to his friend, "That's the girl I'm going to marry!". And so he did and raised 3 beautiful daughters. Janice Marie, Carolyn and Elaine.
As a young man, was raised by his Step-Father Owen Thorne and mother on a farm in Ft. Washington, MD near the Potomac River (Fort Foote).
Held an annual Crab feast to bring family together.
Loved to hunt with his son-in-law Bennie Bradley. They had a strong bond together, like father and son. Ash got Bennie into the D.C. Police force. Loved to have a beer or two and discuss politics and the world.
Died of a heart aneurism in his house in Berryville, Clarke Co, VA.
