Was a founding officer of Quebec's Royal 22nd Regiment (the Vingt-Deux, or "Van-Doos") and later became their commanding officer (1926-28). Represented Canada at the League of Nations. From 1939 served as minister to France; from 1943 he was minister to all Allied governments in exile in London. Ambassador to France (1944-1953). Highly respected and admired. Governor-General of Canada (1959-1967). Died in office.
