Robert Newton Caldwell was the son of Andrew Caldwell (b. 1800 in Scotland, d. 1862 at Cape Girardeau County, Missouri) and Margaret McCord Query (b. 1801 in North Carolina, d. 1870). The family moved from North Carolina to Missouri in c1835. In 1850 the Andrew Caldwell family (including son Robert) were living at Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

Robert married Mary R. Stevenson (1838-1892) on 26 Nov 1857 at Lamar County, Texas. Robert and Mary were reportedly the parents of 12 children, the names of four known, namely:

1. Sarah Jane Caldwell Quillen (1862-1921)
2. Robert Calvin Caldwell (1865-1936)
3. Agnes L. Caldwell Johnson (1874-1959)
4. John H. Caldwell (1879-a1892)

After Mary Stevenson Caldwell died, Robert remarried to the widow Mary Etta Beard McHargue (1863–1954) on 06 Aug 1894 in Texas. Robert and Mary were the parents of one known child, namely:

5. Anna Loueva Caldwell Waldrep (1895-1983)

Robert and his first wife Mary are buried next to Mary's Stevenson parents at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, on the Fort Hood Military Reservation, Coryell County, Texas. A special pass and escort is needed to visit the cemetery. Robert served with the Confederates (Capt. Graham's Company) during the Civil War. This was a unit protecting the Texas frontier against Indians and Mexican marauders during the Civil War. Mary Stevenson Caldwell was the mother of 12 children, only three being alive (Robert, Sarah and Agnes) at her death in 1892. So a lot of children (presumably died young or maybe even stillborn) are unaccounted for. In 1880 the parents, Sarah, Robert, Agnes and John were living at Coryell County, Texas. In 1900 Robert, his 2nd wife Mary and three McHargue children from Mary Etta Beard's first marriage, along with Ann Caldwell (b. Aug 1895, a child of Robert and Mary Beard Caldwell) and an Etta Caldwell (b. Oct 1897, a grand-daughter of Robert) were living at Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas. Mary Etta said she was the mother of four, all living.
