NEW CASTLE - Virgil "Pete" Armstrong, 86, of rural New Castle, passed away Monday, May 26, 2014 at Glen Oaks Health Campus.

He was born June 20, 1927 in Farmers, Kentucky, the last surviving child, to the late Homer Lee and Gretna (Cogswell) Armstrong.

He attended Cadiz High School and retired from General Motors-Delco Remy in Anderson in 1989 following forty-five years of service. He served in the United States Marines during World War II. Pete was a lifelong farmer and owned and operated Armstrong Farms until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Eagles and was a Golden Eagle, a lifelong member of Farm Bureau and a member of the UAW #662. Pete enjoyed his family, sport car racing, especially his grandsons racing, and western movies. He also enjoyed looking over the crops and fields.

Pete resided at his home in Cadiz until 2012. He then moved to Glen Oaks Senior Living at Forest Ridge and was recently transferred to Glen Oaks Health Campus.

Survivors include six children, Vicky Sue (Lewis) Koning of Decatur, IN, Jack (Brenda) Armstrong of New Castle, Gary Armstrong of Cadiz, Bonnie Lou Griffin of Markleville, Craig Lee (Marti) Armstrong of New Castle and Neil Alan (Teresa) Armstrong of New Castle; grandchildren, Kampanella Koning, Kortney Koning, Aaron Armstrong, Stacey (Zach) Tolle, Jason Armstrong (fiancé, Kristi White), Traver (Alicia) Griffin, Austin Griffin, Dakoda Armstrong (fiancé, Karlee Hensley), Dalton Armstrong, Caleb Armstrong, Hannah Armstrong; great-grandchildren, Alexa and Trinity Griffin; step-children, Larry Bole of Muncie and Diane Lawson of Anderson; several step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Clarice E. (Craig) Armstrong whom he married May 1953 until her death, May 1980 and his second wife, Dorothy (McClain) Armstrong of Anderson, they were married June 20, 1981; brother, Mort Ralph "Jack" Armstrong; sisters, Mildred Cassity Shores, Lucille Armstrong and Sally "Cricket" McKenzie.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 2, 2014 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Chris Gammello and Reverend Dr. Clark E. Hobby officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Cadiz Christian Church, Cadiz Volunteer Fire Department or VFW Post #1282.
