Cleo Gordon Bates, age 94, a resident of Texarkana, Arkansas, and former resident of De Queen, died Saturday, September 20, 2008 at his home.
He was born to Martin Steven and Allie Mae Oldham Bates at Mena, Arkansas, on May 19, 1914. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with General George Patton in the U. S. Army. He owned and operated the Bates Dry Cleaners, as well as a farmer and rancher in De Queen area for many years. He was a lifelong Methodist, and at his death, was a member of the Rondo United Methodist Church in Texarkana. He was a 50 year Mason, and a member of the Sweet Home Masonic Lodge in De Queen, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Paul Bates, an infant daughter, Sue Ellen Bates and his first wife of 62 years, Bernice McCrary Bates.

He is survived by his wife, Clova Bates of Texarkana, Ark.; two daughters and sons-in-law, May Mae and B. A. Mauldin of Farmington, Arkansas, Sue Ann and Don Jackson of Texarkana, Ark.; two grandchildren, Berry Mauldin, IV of Rowlett, Texas, and Cindy Garner of Fayetteville, Ark.; six great-grandchildren, three stepsons, and spouses, Charles and Donna Williams of Dickinson, Tex., Joe and Marilyn Williams of Hot Springs, Ark.; Don and Ann Williams of Lake Jackson, Texas, one stepdaughter and spouse, Martha and Ray Hines of Nashville, Ark.

A graveside memorial services for Mr. Cleo Bates will be held at the Gillham Cemetery with Rev. Glen Green and Rev. Robert Armstrong officiating. on Saturday, September 27th at 3:00 p.m.
