Ralph Eugene Asbury, age 82, of Asbury Center at Birdmont Retirement Center in Wytheville, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, April 11, 1999 in Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Tazewell County, the son of the late James L. and Carrie McGuire Asbury. He was a graduate of Bluefield Business College, class of 1935, a retired controller with Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, a member of the Rural Retreat Lions Club, and a former member of the Marion Rotary Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Looney Asbury. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Robert DeBord, Rural Retreat; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dannita Asbury, Bloomington, Ill., and Alan and Karen Asbury, Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Brown, Flint, Mich., and Shirley Cochran, Port Charlotte, Fla.; three brothers, James P. Asbury, Coeburn, Charles Asbury, Clio, Mich., and Cecil Asbury, Salem; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held today, April 14, at 11 a.m. at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Countiss and the Rev. James L. Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Lions Club or to the St. Paul United Methodist Church. Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat is in charge of arrangements.
