Rev. Gaston Battle is the son of Turner Westray Battle & Lavinia Bassett Daniel. He was born at Cool Spring Plantation in Tarboro. He married three times:
1st - Tamar Haughton Manning on 31 Dec 1890 in Chapel Hill NC
2nd - Nannie Barlow Speight on 19 Feb 1895 in Tarboro NC
3rd - Elizabeth Plummer Wright on 2 Nov 1897 in Petersburg VA

Gaston Battle Rites Tuesday
Relatives of Many Local Residents Was Buried Near Family Homestead

Funeral services for Gaston Battle, former resident of Rocky Mount and Cool Spring Plantation in Edgecombe county and relative of several prominent Rocky Mount people was held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning from the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Father Gallagher, rector of the church, officiating. Burial followed at the family burying ground at Cool Spring Plantation.
Mr. Battle died of a heart attack late Saturday while visiting his daughter, Mrs. Treadwell Covington, at Miami Beach, Fla. He was 66 years old and had been in failing health for several months. Of late years a resident of Atlanta, Ga., he had recently been moved to Miami Beach because it was thought a change would be beneficial. Relatives reported that he stood the trip well, but in a few days grew very much worse.
His only surviving brother, George Gordon Battle, a prominent New York lawyer, and Mrs. George Gordon Battle, had just returned home from a visit to Mr. Battle's bedside in Atlanta before he was moved to Miami Beach.
Mr. Battle is survived by his third wife, the former Miss Betty Plummer Wright of Petersburg, Va., and three children born of his third marriage: Joseph Daniel Battle of Brooklyn, New York, Mrs. Elizabeth Vivington of Miami Beach and Miss Harriet Gordon of Havana, Cuba.
Among the nieces and nephews surviving are Turner Westray Battle of Rocky Mount and Washing ton, D. C., assistant to the United States secretary of labor; Mrs. Frank Wilkinson, Miss Mary Long Battle and Turner Battle Bunn, all of Rocky Mount ; and William Sims Bunn of Nashville, Mrs. Westriv Battle Boyce of Washington, D. CL and Mrs. Richard Taylor of Dunn. Numerous other relatives in Rocky Mount and throughout the state.
Mr. Battle was born January 11, 1871, the youngest child of Capt. Turner Westray Battle and Lavinia Daniel Battle who lived on the Cool Spring Plantation, the old Battle homestead for many generations. It was settled in 1747 by his ancester, Elisha Battle. Among out of town relatives to attend the funeral were, Mrs. Gaston Battle, of Atlanta, Ga., Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Daniel Battle of Brooklyn, N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Treadwell Covington of Miami, Mr. and Mrs. George Gordon Battle of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. Turner Westray Battle 111, Mrs. Westray Battle Boyce and Mrs. H. H. MacKay, all of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Richard Taylor of Dunn and Miss Harriet Gordon Battle of Havana, Cuba.
