Barry D. Arter, 68, of 13704 Bakers Hollow Road, Hesston, PA 16647 and formerly of Bunny View Drive, Lititz, PA, died unexpectedly on Satuday, June 14, 2008, at J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, PA.

Born March 11, 1940, in Columbia, PA, he was a son of the late Chester H. Arter, Sr. and Evelyn (Bryant) Arter who survives at Conestoga View in Lancaster. He was united in marriage to Carol S. (Greathouse) Arter on August 27, 1966 in Columbia, PA. Mrs. Arter survives at their Hesston, PA residence.

In addition to his mother and wife, Mr. Arter is survived by one daughter and one son: Susan A. Gruber and her husband, Jay, of Mt. Joy, PA; David E. Arter and his fiancee, Thelma June Stevens of Buckeye, WV; three grandchildren: Trevor B. Gruber, Kimberley and Denise Gruber, all of Mt. Joy; and one great granddaughter, Hailee Sheaffer.

He is also survived by two brothers and one sister: Chester Arter of Waleski, GA; Gerald Arter of Columbia, PA; Linda Becker of Manheim, PA. He was preceded in death by one sister: Carol Cooke.

Mr. Arter was a member of the former Cookman Methodist Church, Columbia, PA. He belonged to Lodge No. 43, F&AM, Lancaster, PA; A.A.S.R., Valley of Lancaster, Consistory Valley of Harrisburg, PA; G.W.R.R.A.

He was educated in the public schools of Columbia, PA, and was a graduate of Columbia High School.

He was a Certified Master Automobile Technician, retiring in 2003 from Jones Pontiac in Lancaster.

He and Mrs. Arter enjoyed traveling on his Goldwing Trike and he also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Inc., 417 Washington Street, Huntingdon, PA 16652 with the Reverend Lou Zannino officiating. Interment will be made in the Anderson Cemetery, Penn Township, Hesston.

Friends may call at the John B. Brown Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service on Wednesday, June 18, 2008.
