Born in Andrews, SC, he was the son of the late M. Lee and Rhoda Norton Ackerman. He served in the US Navy during World War II.
Tom was a Lieutenant of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, retiring in 1989 after 37 years of service. He worked in the District 3 area, including the Upstate of Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens Counties.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of the SC Troopers Association.
Tom was a member of Taylors First Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters, Martha A. (John) Holloway, of Mt. Pleasant; and Laura Lyn (Peter) Pauze, of Granville, OH; a son, Thomas N. (Mercedes) Ackerman, Jr., of Anderson; a stepdaughter, Debbie M. (Frank) Ridlehoover, of Spartanburg; two sisters, Hazel A. Hegler, and Vera A. Haynes; one brother, Jimmie Ackerman all of Lancaster; five grandchildren, Matthew Holloway, Amanda Holloway, Luis Ackerman, Samuel Ackerman and Ashlyn Ridlehoover; and two great grandchildren, Nolan and Ava Ackerman.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 11am at Taylors First Baptist Church, with Dr. Jimmie E. Harley and Dr. Ernest Carswell officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland East Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 8, 2011 from 5-7pm at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
