William Lee (Sonny) Barnes, 76 of Eula peacefully died Thursday, December 22, 2016 at a care home in Lubbock after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2016 at Bailey Howard Funeral Home Chapel in Clyde with Rev. Larry Adams officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Hawley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.
Sonny was born October 4, 1940 in Merkel to Lloyd and Bertha (Ueckert) Barnes.
He graduated from Clyde High School in 1959.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1963 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was stationed in Vicenza, Italy. During this time, Sonny played basketball on the Army Base Team and played against many foreign competitors. While in the Army, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, Marksman (M-14 Rifle), Sharpshooter (M-1 Rifle), Expert (Carbine), Basic Missileman’s Badge (Lchr) and Driver’s Badge w/bar. After his Honorable Discharge, Sonny served in the U.S. Army Reserves while attending college in Abilene from 1963-1966.
He married Kathy Wood in Hawley on July 8, 1966.
He graduated from Hardin Simmons University in 1968 where he was in the Rangers and rode bulls in the HSU Rodeo.
In 1980, Sonny received his Master’s Degree from Tarleton State University.
He coached girls’ basketball and track for many years and was a member of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) and Texas Girls High School Coaches Association. He had numerous teams make the playoffs and he had a special girls’ mile relay team that won State in 1979 from Rotan.
Sonny enjoyed many years of teaching Sunday school and was a part of the Southwest Baptist Church Building Association where he travelled to Montana and Kansas to help build churches. Sonny was an avid supporter of Buckner’s Children’s Home where he adopted both of his sons.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy Barnes; two sons, Bryan Barnes and wife Paige of Lubbock and Guy Barnes and wife Tara of Lampasas; a brother, Gary Barnes of Slidell and a step-brother David Walker of Princeton; two sisters, Phillis Parsons of McKinney and Sandra Barnes-Smith of Arlington; five grandchildren, Zoe Barnes, Madilyn Barnes, Ethan Barnes, Brianna Brudney and Bryce McCary and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Shirley Tucker and Nelda Harkins.
Bryan Barnes, Guy Barnes, Kevin Harkins, Jeremy Tucker, Randy Rains, and Stephen Biddy will serve as pall bearers.
