STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Longtime Great Kills resident Eugene Amadio, 81, a retired Conrail worker and a loving father and grandfather, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born in Brooklyn, he also lived in Queens and New Hampshire before settling in Great Kills in 1963.
A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Amadio served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1958.
He worked for Conrail for 39 years.
Mr. Amadio loved nature. He was interested in geology and enjoyed digging up rocks and minerals. He also was an avid gardener.
His wife of 54 years, the former Geraldine Gardner, died in 2006.
Surviving are his sons, Eugene Jr., and Dana; two brothers, Donald and Dennis; two sisters, Claudia Toll and Jeannie Carlson, and three grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
