ST. PAUL — Joseph McKay, 74, died Friday of heart failure.
Born in St. Paul, he was a farmer before becoming the post master. He was the founder of the St. Paul Mission Historical Society and a former mayor of the city.
He was a charter member of the Archdiocies of Portland Historical Society, St. Paul Rodeo Association, American Legion and the St. Paul Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by two sons.
Survivors include his wife, Rosella (Gooley), whom he married in 1949; sons, Tom of Grand Island and Jim of Keizer; daughters, Kathleen Fromherz and Jean Roy, both of Portland, Joan Spada of St. Paul, Ruth Sisto of Stayton, Carol McKay of Oakland, Calif., Rosemary Tanner of Sherwood, and Grace Oleman and Mary Jones, both of Salem; brothers, Harold of Woodburn, Richard and Arthur of St. Paul, and Francis of Reno, Nev.; sisters, Agnes Hemshorn of Mount Angel, and Mary Henderson and Nellie Simone, both of Portland; 27 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visiting will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Cornwell Colonial Chapel. Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church, where he was a member.
Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Vault interment will be at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery. Contributions: St. Paul Ambulance or St. Paul Historical Society.
