William Peter "Bill" Ackerman passed away peacefully on Sept. 11, 2010, at Plum Ridge Nursing Home.
Bill was born on Nov. 5, 1922, to Clarence and Edna Ackerman in Torrington, Conn.
At the age of 17, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country proudly in WorId War II. After his tour of duty in the South Pacific, he was relocated for medical attention to the old Oregon Institute of Technology campus, where he received his honorable discharge. That was when he met and married his wife of 62 years Marian Schieferstein.
He became a volunteer fireman, which led him to a 35-year career with the Klamath Falls City Fire Department, retiring in 1982. While with the fire department, he served in many capacities, retiring as the city fire marshal.
Once he was retired, he was able to enjoy traveling, making several trips to Alaska to visit his daughter and family and later a special fishing trip with his son. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and especially cutting firewood.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marian; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Teresa Ackerman of Grants Pass, Ore.; granddaughter, Jennifer Hoy-Olin of Sunriver, Ore.; grandson and wife, Lief and Suzy Olin of Klamath Falls, Ore.; great-grandchildren, Tom Hoy, Heidi Hoy, and Gunnar Olin; brother, Bob Ackerman of West Bloomfield, Mich.; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters, great-grandson, Isak Olin, and daughter, Kathy Olin.
