Sherman Robertson Allen, 98, of Baker City died Nov. 1, 2010, at his home.

There will be a celebration of his life at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1995 Fourth St. Pastor Al Fry will officiate. There will be a luncheon afterward in Rogers Hall at the church.

Sherman was born on Dec. 22, 1911, at Richland to Daniel W. and Lura E. Gover Allen. He was a 1930 graduate of Eagle Valley High School at Richland and then continued on to college.

He graduated in 1936 as a pharmacy major from Oregon State College, now Oregon State University, at Corvallis. He interned in Richland at the Richland Drug Store under the guidance of Shorty Hewitt, the store owner.

Sherman was called into military service in 1942 after the bombing at Pearl Harbor. He began basic training in the Army in September of that year and it lasted about 19 weeks. In May he was moved by ship with 5,500 other troops to the South Pacific.

In August he was assigned to the Hospital Unit at Finch Haven as a pharmacist. He remained there from 1944 until June of 1945 with the 364th Station Hospital.

In 1945, after the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima, Sherman’s unit, the entire hospital, was loaded aboard the hospital ship HOPE and sent to Kyoto, Japan, where they took over a Japanese Red Cross hospital. He spent the remainder of his military service there.

Shortly after returning home in January of 1946, Sherm was asked to take over the Economy Drug Store, then owned by Buford Morris. Sherman and Rod Crosby purchased the drug store in August of 1948 and renamed it Payless Drug. They sold the drug store in June 1976 to Joseph Teter.

He was married to Amy Vaughn who died in 1970. He then married Pansey Dolan in May 1971. She passed away in 2005.

Sherm was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church and a long time volunteer at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. He was 32nd degree Scottish Rite, 50-year member, and then became a long time Shrine member.

Survivors include his stepdaughter, Sandra Allen, and her husband John, of Salem; and a stepson, Wayne Coffman, and his wife, Bonnie, of La Grande.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church or the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center or the Blue Mountain Masonic Lodge, No. 34, through Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.
