José was preceded in death by his parents, Donicio and Francesquita M. Barela, a brother, Ramon Thomas Barela and two half brothers, Crisantos Barela and Leopoldo Barela.
José is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Geneva E. Barela of the family home in Mora, NM, one daughter, Lillian Martínez and her husband, John Pat of Ribera, NM, two sons, Benjie Barela and his wife, Dorothy of Las Vegas, NM and Larry J. Barela and his wife, Lori of Mora, NM, two brothers, Tranquilino Barela of Mora, NM and Donicio Sandoval and his wife, Jane of Wagon Mound, NM, one sister, Mary Maés of Bloomfield, NM, hermano, Lazaro Barela de la Morada Central del Valle Santa Gertrudes de Mora and by ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. José was born in Mora, New Mexico on March 12, 1937.
In his early years he was a sheep herder and worked as a forester and a fire fighter for the United States Forest Service. In his later years due to a disability, he enjoyed carpentry and working around the house and cleaning his yard. Jose was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Mora.
Cremation has already taken place and a rosary will be recited this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Father George V. Salazar will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery in Mora.
