Juan Maria Acosta, 82, a longtime Deming resident, passed away on Thursday at Sierra Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, after an extended illness.
Visitation will be today, Monday, April 7, from 2 until 5 at Baca's Funeral Chapels and the prayer vigil will be this evening at 7 o'clock at St. Ann's Catholic Church, led by Elias Anchieta. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 8, at 10 o'clock, also at St. Ann's and the Rite of Committal and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife. Deacon Richard Rodriguez will officiate.
He was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Huejucar, Jalisco, Mexico, to Ramon Acosta Luna and Maria Acevedo Robles. On Oct. 9, 1955, he married Lucia Sanchez in Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico, and moved to Deming 53 years ago. He was a communicant at St. Ann's Catholic Church and had been a rancher and farmer all of his life with a great devotion to doing his work right and enjoying what he did. Before retiring, he was employed at Deming Public Schools as a custodian at the Middle School. Juan's home was always open to family, friends and strangers alike. Everyone received the same welcome smile. His love for the Lord, his faith, life and nature were an important part of his quality of life.
Survivors include four sons, Javier Acosta, Waskom, Texas, Juan Acosta Jr., Deming; Robert Acosta and wife Margaret, Deming; and Henry Acosta and wife Celicia, Las Cruces; 4 daughters, Delia and husband Curtis Cooper; Amelia and husband David Prince; Mary and husband Manny Ovalle; all of Deming; and Lucy Acosta and husband Frank Reyna, Las Cruces; 4 brothers, Jesus Acosta, Deming' Isidro, Silv'rimitiva Barrio, Deming; 35 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Maria; wife Lucia Acosta on January 8, 1986; son, Lupe Acosta who died Dec. 26, 1999; brother, Jose Angel Acosta and sister Margarita Padilla.
Serving as pallbearers will be his four sons: Javier, Robert, Henry and Juan Acosta Jr., and two sons-in-law, Manny Ovalle and Curtis Cooper.
Honorary bearers named are his grandchildren and Fernando Barrio.
