Joe "Mayo" Armijo, age 81, a resident of Las Vegas, New Mexico passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, June 25, 2001 following a brief illness. Mayo was born in Socorro, New Mexico to Solomon O. Armijo and Candelaria Serna Armijo. Mayo was united in marriage at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Las Vegas, New Mexico on November 9, 1941 to Corinne Romero. Mayo was a wonderful husband, father, brother and grandfather. Mayo made a difference in the lives of all who knew and loved him, his family, students, athletes and friends. A graduate of New Mexico Highlands University, Mayo received his BA Degree in Physical Education in 1942 and his MA Degree in Education Administration in 1949. A star athlete at Magdalena High School and New Mexico Highlands University, Mayo earned many honors including College All Conference Basketball Player and 1942 National AAU Basketball Honorable Mention Award and High Point Man in the conference. In 1949, he set an all time New Mexico Highlands University record in the Mile Run, a record which is still held today. An accomplished coach, Mayo's Santa Rosa Lions captured the 1956 Boys Basketball State Championship. In 1982, in recognition for his many coaching and officiating achievements, Mayo was inducted into the New Mexico Activities Hall of Fame. Mayo was one of the cofounders of the prestigious Stu Clark Tournament and founder of the San Miguel/Mora Basketball Officials Association. After a career 39 years in education and athletics, he retired in 1979. His career in education included teacher, Administrator and Coach at the Mora Independent Schools, Wagon Mound, Santa Rosa, West Las Vegas, Trementina, Santa Cruz and Pecos Schools. Mayo was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Martin Armijo, Raymond Armijo, Willie Armijo, John Armijo and Claude Armijo, sisters, Dome' Gilbert, Lilly Winston, Mary Molinar and Grego Pino. Mayo is survived by his loving wife, Corinne R. Armijo of the family home in Las Vegas, NM, daughters and sons, Aileen Garcia and her husband, Bill of Rio Rancho, NM, John "Tinker" Armijo and Lawrence Armijo and his wife, Margaret all of Santa Fe, NM, Rosemarie Montoya and her husband, Les of Las Vegas, NM and Joseph "Duke" Armijo and his wife, Truva of Chico, California, grandchildren who loved him dearly, grandsons, Kevin Garcia, Les Montoya, Jr., J.J. Mayo Montoya and Sean Armijo; granddaughters, Kara Sandoval and her husband, Donald, Mary Lucille Montoya, Corrine Armijo, Candice Montoya, Michelle Armijo and Annette Armijo, great-granddaughters, Jenna Sturgis and Kaleigh Sturgis, sisters, Rose Dearholt and Emma Armijo both of Albuquerque, NM, brother, Solomon Armijo Jr. and his wife, Beverly of California, brothers-in-law, Arthur "Dinty" Romero and his wife, Ophelia of Santa Fe, NM, Robert J. Romero and his wife, Betty of Illinois, Leo Romero and his wife, Dora of California and Frank Romero and his wife, Martha of Illinois and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends. Rosary Devotional Services will be conducted on Friday, June 29, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, June 30, 2001 at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with Father Vincent G. DeFazio as Celebrant. Cremation has taken place. Interment of cremains will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship will be established at New Mexico Highlands University, NMHU Foundation, PO Box 9000, Las Vegas, NM 87701.
