Obituary: Alton Akins

Funeral services for Alton Lee Akins, age 87, of Conroe will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 10 a.m. in Cashner Colonial Chapel. Interment will follow in Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 23, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cashner Funeral Home.

Alton was born December 14, 1922 in Rosebud, Texas and passed away on June 22, 2010 at his home in Conroe, Texas. He served his country in the U. S. Marines during WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the New Covenant Baptist Church. He was also a member of the following organizations: Lettermen's Association of Texas A&M, Grand Lodge of Texas 32nd degree Master Mason and Scottish Rite, Architect for the state of Texas, inspector for the Veteran's Administration and the Marine Night Fighter Association. Alton was a former Assistant Director of the Texas Department of Corrections and also worked for the Texas Board of Controls in Austin, Texas. After retirement, he worked for PBK Architect firm in Houston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Lee Akins and Lola Adelia Nickerson Akins. Alton is survived by his loving wife, Betty Sue Akins of Conroe; daughter, Bonnie Lee McBride and husband Carey of Rochelle; brother, Edwin Akins of LaMarque, grandchildren, Jondan Phillip and wife Desiree of Leander and Jason Paul of Buda; great grandchildren, Owen Grella and Aaron Grella, both of Leander. Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. Pallbearers will be Jondan McBride, Jason McBride, Wayne Nickerson, David Akins, Dwayne McWhorter, Cole McWhorter, John David Waltz and J. C. Davis.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the Lighthouse Hospice staff for the wonderful care they extended to Alton and also thank you to the Heart and Vascular Institute at Conroe Regional Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lighthouse Hospice, 14011 Park Drive, Suite 201, Tomball, Texas 77377.
