Mr. George Wesley Alford, age 104 of 26 Poplar Street, Toccoa, GA passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011 at the Stephens County Hospital.

A son of the late James Wesley and Lula Elizabeth Turner Alford, he was born February 8, 1907 in Ripley, Tennessee having lived in Maryland for the greater part of his life and having moved to Toccoa in 1993. He retired from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Collins Road Baptist Church; he was preceded in death by a grandson Matthew Macy.

Survivors include his wife Mildred Bryant Alford of the home, step-daughter Deborah (Grover) Hallum of Toccoa, step-son Rodger (Erie) Macy of Savannah, GA, grandchildren, Ted (Sarah) Hallum, Tim Hallum, Darrell (Cheryl) Macy, 3 great-grandchildren, half-brother Boyd Alford of Memphis, TN sister, Dorothy Temple of Memphis, TN.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Sunday at the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Reverend Todd Lyda officiating.

The family will be at the home of Poplar Street and will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from noon until the service time.

Interment will be in the Toccoa City Cemetery with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements for Mr. George Alford.
