OTTAWA - Norman Gale Backman, 84, of Ottawa, formerly of Yuma, Ariz., went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the La Salle Veterans Home.

Norman was born March 15, 1925, in Haynes, N.D., to Alfred Werner and Anna Matilda (Hedland) Backman. He married Betty Jane Colley Dec. 24, 1943, in Denver, Colo. He served his Lord faithfully as a missionary for 30 years in Liberia and Sierra Leone, West Africa. Later he became active in the MapsRV program for more than 13 years. He was an Army World War II veteran.

He is survived by a daughter; Ruth Anna (Sporty) Mincks of Sheridan; two sons, Kenneth (Carroll) Backman of Ontario, Calif., and Randall (Cheri) Backman of Post Falls, Idaho; 14 grandchildren, Betty Wilson, DeAnna Hagy, Daniel, Stephen, Anna, Paul and Melinda Mincks, Jami Daughtery, Sarah Cavazos, Jonathan Backman and Christina, Alicia, Ryan and Crystal; and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2005 and two brothers, Dennis and Lee Backman.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Praise Center Assembly of God in Ottawa with the Rev. Ray Mitchell officiating.Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley, and one hour before services Saturday at the church.
