Verlie M. Boatright, 67, of Hortense community, died Friday evening (July 16, 2004) in Jesup following an extended illness. A native of Telfair County she was the daughter of the late Bernice Allen and was married to Richard Boatright on May 17, 1957.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kayla Taft, a step-sister, Rosa Lynn and two half-brothers, Jerry Rowell and J.E. Rowell.

Besides her husband, survivors include five children, Ricky Boatright (Susan) of Claxton, Evelyn Davis (Darrell) of Kingsland, July Taft (Clayton) of Douglas, Deloris Boatright of Douglas and Janice Mercer (Vic) of Hortense; nine grandchildren, Richard Boatright III, Darrell, James, and Jessica Davis, Katina and Bubba Taft, and Cameron and Seth Mercer. She is also survived by four half-sisters, Clara Gourley, Carolyn Landrum, and Linda Sweat, all of Douglas and Helen Tapley of Alabama; four step-sisters, Dell Fleming of Mississippi, Reat Mullis of Jesup, Vivian Reed and Sue Cofield, both of Clermont, Fla.; two half-brothers, Larry Rowell of Douglas and Charles Rowell of Atkinson. Many will remember Ms. Verlie for her happy, light-hearted personality and great cooking.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at Hortense Church of God of Prophecy with burial following in Satilla Cemetery. The Rev. Don Musgrove and the Rev. Hinton Johnson will officiate. Joel Chambless Funeral Home of Nahunta assisted the family with the arrangements.
