Joe Marvin Akins, Jr. age 84, of Blairsville, passed away on Monday, October 25, 2004 in the Clay County Care Center in Hayesville, NC. Born in Union County, Mr. Akins was the son of the late Joseph Marvin, Sr. and Molly Coker Akins. He retired from Campbell's Pepper Plant as a company supervisor. Mr. Akins was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville. He was also a WWII veteran, serving in the United States Air Force.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Sue Colwell; one brother, Pat Akins both of Blairsville; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Old Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville with Rev. B.A. Buchanan, Rev. Danny Parris and Min. Terry Stuart officiating. Music was by Terry Hooper. Interment followed in the Blairsville City Cemetery with full Military Honors by the North GA Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Jim Colwell, Larry Akins, Milton Akins, George Akins, Van Akins, and Doug Gooch. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Dobson, Norm Thompson, Roy Bateman, Bobby Dillinger, Edwin Cook, Ray Rogers, Bud Nichols, Mike Mashburn, and W.C. Nelson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wynelle Akins Scholarship Fund c/o First Baptist Church of Blairsville, GA. Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.
