Birth: Jan. 18, 1879
Wayne County
Missouri, USA
Death: Jan. 24, 1964

Married Elijah Henry Bess 22/Jan/1911.

Zoa Ethel Bess, daughter of the late Emily and LeRoy Ward, was born near Hiram in Wayne Co., Mo. on January 18, 1879, and died at the home of her nephew Frank Ward, on January 24, 1964, at the age of 85 years and 6 days. She lived for many years at Marquand and was a member of the Marquand Church. In 1911, she was united in marriage to Elijah H. Bess, who preceded her in death in 1940. Two brothers, N.A. and B. O. Ward; a niece and a nephew she reared, Mildred and Raymond Ward, also preceded her in death. She leaves one brother, R. H. Ward of Advance and three children she reared as her own, Lois Barker and James Ownby of St. Louis and Ethely Ownby of Springfield, Ore. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Marquand. The ladies of that church seemed over laden with love for "Aunt Zoa" as she was affectiontely called. The church as beautiful with all the many floral offerings. At noon these wonderful friends served a delicious dinner to all the relatives and friends of the deceased. She was a gracious lady with love in her heart. She loved these children she mothered as if they had been born her own. By hard work and management, she educated them and they grew into honest, upright citizens. Special songs, beautifully renedered by Mrs. Marlene Cheek were Aunt Zoa's favorites, "When They Ring Those Golden Bells" and "Blest Be the Tie That Binds". Pallbearers were her nephews and great nephews; Doyle Barker, Iverson, Winford, Roy Michael and Gary Ward. She was laid to rest in the Whitener Cemetery near the town she loved so well, where her husband was resting. She had erected a beautiful double monument and resting place overlooking the cemetery.
