This information was provided by Jerry Bennett, Son of Orton Bennett, Jr.

Dad got very sick less than a year after Shirley passed, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. (Shirley was my sister and passed away March 4, 1947 after a three day illness. Shirley was just under 12 years old).

Grandpap (Orton Bennett, Sr.) took Daddy to Fort Worth and contacted a Doctor at the Mayo Hospital in Minnesota. I was told that he was kin to Grandpap. I know that Grandpap, Mother and I met him and the train in Fort Worth and drove him to the hospital. I was only five years old and it was the first time I had ever been out of Bryson. It made a big impression on me. The Doctor took three-quarters of Daddy’s stomach out and he was in the hospital for a very long time. After he came home he was unable to work for over a year. Grandpap would bring us two sacks of groceries every Saturday for the following year, before Dad finally went to work at the refinery there in Bryson and the family started getting back on our feet. Daddy could not eat anything solid after his surgery and cows milk had too much acid in it so Grandpap bought a goat and brought it to us. Dad didn’t have the strength to milk the goat and every time Mother tried to milk it, the goat would kick her. We had a terrible time getting goat’s milk until Mr. Mitchell, who lived down the street from us, came by and saw what a time I was having and showed me that you only milked goats from behind. After learning this, I didn’t have a problem.

In speaking to my sister, Joyce (Evelyn), she had just gotten married so she did not make the trip to Fort Worth with us. She remembered well about Grandpap delivering the food to us. Her and her husband, Buddy Gregg, Sr., lived in Jacksboro at that time, and she came to visit many weekends when Grandpap came.

In 1950 or 1951 we moved to Graham and Dad worked there in the oil business. We also had some cows out at the farm. Grandmother Bennett (Pauline Elizabeth Bottoms Bennett) came to live with us for several months around that time before she went back to their farm. I do not remember details, but I believe she was sick as I remember going to see her at the Olney Hospital. I remember it well as I had to sleep on a pallet in the living room while she was there. I then went off to college. Daddy would not let me go to work after High School. He always said that he was going to have one of his children graduate from college. He was very adamant about that. Joyce (Evelyn), my sister, was the smart one but she got married as soon as she got out of High School. After college, I was drafted into the Vietnam War, so I joined the Navy and went to Flight School and became a Navy pilot. I retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander and was the commanding officer of a squadron when I retired.

Orton Bennett, Jr. was musically talented. He played the 4 string mandolin as well as the rolling piano.
