Mrs. Kate Downey Barrett died at her home in Bakersfield, Calif. on Aug. 7, 1923. Deceased was born on Brooks farm, near Paris, Bourbon county, Ky. in February 1849. She was the daughter of Michael Gregory Downey and Johanna Welch.
Her father came to St. Joseph in 1858, and there she grew to womanhood. She attended school at the Convent of Sacred Heart. A picture of the old-time school hangs in the room in which she died. Many times during her last days she would rest her eyes on that picture and say "The happiest days of my life were spent in Patee Town".
On Feb 23, 1876 she was married in Plattsburg to John Barrett, who was one of the pioneer Irishmen of Clinton county, he having come into the Hemple neighborhood in 1857, where he went to work for the father of John Louis Wylie, thirteen years of their married life was pent on what is not the Lou P. Searce farm. Husband death occurred in 1909 in Jackson county. In 1910 Mrs. Barrett moved to California, where she has since resided.
She is survived by on daughter, Miss Josie Barrett and three sons, Tom and Michael, who with their sister, lives in Bakersfield and the third son John of Los Angeles, T.M. Downey of Plattsburg and Jas. F. Downey of St. Louis are brothers.
