William was one of the first settlers of Fayette County, along with Guy Beck. He was a surveyor, and the land upon which he settled in the Twin Churches area south, in Fayette County, was known as the Nichols Prairie. He was also a Justice of the Peace and performed many of the early marriages in the area. His descendants stayed in the area, living in Tower Hill and Oconee.
