Per census entries, William indicates he was born in the state of Georgia in 1784. He then moved to Bowling Green, Warren County, KY. He married (1) Peninah/Pernuliah Pugh in 1805, (2) Mary Hall, who is listed as his spouse in his will.

William was one of the first settlers of Fayette County, along with Guy Beck. He was a surveyor, and the land upon which he settled in the Twin Churches area south, in Fayette County, was known as the Nichols Prairie. He was also a Justice of the Peace and performed many of the early marriages in the area. His descendants stayed in the area, living in Tower Hill and Oconee. William subsequently moved to Shelbyville, Shelby County, where he died.William Nichols born in Ga. according to Census. He married Peninah Pugh 1805 Ky. Her parents were John Pugh and Elinor Fruit. William was Justice of the Peace and performed many early marriages. He lived in Shelby and Fayette Counties in Illinois . William and Peninah had 8 known children by 1830. Children were : #1.Thomas Pugh Nichols b 1806 -d.1858 married Melinda Ginger and Delinda Rhodes. #2. William H.Nichols b. 1810-d 1834 married Ann Austin. #3. Strother Nichols married Mary A "Polly" Carson and Alethe Smith. #4. Matilda Nichols b 1818-d. 1871 married Elike Austin. #5 Malinda Nichols b. 1820- d. 1900 . married Samuel Austin .# 6 Levi or Lee D Nichols b 1826- d.1920 married Leniann Waggoner. #7 Joseph D Nichols b.1827-d.1892. married Elizabeth Westbrook and Eliza Rogers. #8 Green F Nichols b.1830- d.1862 married Lovina Russell. William remarried after Peninahs' death to Mary Myers unknown what her maiden name is or if it was Myers. Have not found proof of his parents. His will was probated Jan 16 1865
