Irene Chagaris left this world today for a much better place, joining her husband Gus who passed away on Valentine's Day in 2009. Born in Oakland on June 29th, 1924 she was raised in South San Francisco by immigrant Greek parents Peter and Catherine Dress. At her father's restaurant and hotel (Pete's Coffee Shop) she learned the meaning of hard work and giving to the community. It's no coincidence she met her future husband Gus at the restaurant when he stopped in for a bite to eat while on a one-day Army pass on the way to Hawaii just days after Pearl Harbor. It was love at first sight. They would marry after the war and settle in the Bay area. With sons Greg and Mark, she and Gus settled in Millbrae in 1956 as Millbrae Meadows pioneers and lived in her house at 816 Brookside Lane for over 50 years. During this time the Greek Orthodox Church and her faith were always front and center in her life. As a founding member of Holy Cross Church in Belmont she donated countless hours as Publicity Chairwoman to promote the annual Greek Festival. In the early days the "Festival" was held in San Mateo at the (then) location of the Church inside the Masonic Temple-no small wonder getting people to attend a Festival in a temple. She did, though, and countless newspapers picked up the stories and thus began a long time tradition that is still popular and successful to this day. Irene was a member of the Philoptochos, Plato Society, The Children's Home Society and an always willing volunteer. She had tremendous determination and devotion to her family. Nothing else was as important in her life and she was gifted with two children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a wonderful brother. She was the CEO of the family and the house and no one mistook her for anything else. A loving mother and a devoted wife; she left her spirit and her determination to others along life's road and will be remembered by all as a wonderfully strong woman, a great wife, mother and Yiayia-- and a legendary cook. We love you and we miss you. Family and friends are invited to visit after 4:00 PM, Monday, August 1, 2011 and to attend the Trisagion at 7:00 PM at CHAPEL OF THE HIGHLANDS, 194 Millwood Dr. at El Camino Real in Millbrae. The Funeral service will be on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, 11:00 AM at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross, 900 Alameda de las Pulgas in Belmont. Burial will follow at Greek Orthodox Memorial Park in Colma. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Greek Church of the Holy Cross, Belmont, CA 94002.
