Ellen was born in Columbia to Sweden-born James Brown and New York native Elisabeth Gould. She was their eldest child of nine. Her siblings were Charles A., William A., Henrietta L., Laura G., Lillian C., Edith A. and two others. Her father was a successful miner.
After her father's death, Ellen helped support the family by working as a stenographer.
After her mother's death, she moved to San Francisco.
Christian Science services were held at the Burden Chapel on a Saturday morning for Miss Helen Elizabeth Brown, a native of Columbia, who passed away in San Francisco the previous Wednesday evening.
A resident of San Francisco for many years, Miss Brown was survived by a brother, Charles Brown of Sonora; four sisters, Mrs. C. H. Heim of San Francisco, Mrs. J. Clooney of Oakland, Mrs. George Griffin of Sonora and Mrs Robert Thom of Sonora.
Interment was in the Odd Fellows section of Columbia Cemetery.
