Birth: Apr. 15, 1820
Kentucky, USA
Death: Oct. 20, 1884
Tuolumne County
California, USA

Son of Bentley Ballard 17771820 and Dinah Cox 1785-1840 of Kentucky, grandson of Reuben Ballard of South Carolina and Absilla Bentley of North Carolina. Descendant of John Ballard 1635-1725 of Bitton, Gloucesershire, England.

Brother of Simeon Miller Ballard, James Lemuel Ballard and Greenberry Henderson Ballard.

Husband of Nancy Jane Weyer of Ohio, the daughter of John Weyer 1804-1850 and Nancy Fulk 1807-1881. They were married 20 Jan 1846 in Scotland County, Missouri and had seven children:
* William Roscoe Ballard 1848-1877
* Mary Adeline Ballard, Mrs Henry Hall 1849-1918
* Oscar Greenberry Ballard 1852-1884
* Orlander Hudson Ballard 1859-1891
* Elizabeth Jane Ballard, Mrs Charles Adams and Isaac Evans 1855-1915
* Stonewall Jackson Ballard 1863-1889
* Damon Willard Ballard 1864-1904
The first four were born in Missouri and came west with their parents in 1853, the last three were born in Tuolumne County, California. The younger children attended the one room schoolhouse Don Pedro School.

Jeremiah was part of the Ballard Family called the Walker River Emigrants who in 1853 traveled from the Carson River at Carson City, Nevada, through Wellington, Little Antelope Valley, across Walker River, through Leavitt Meadows, up the canyons to the summit of the Sierra Nevadas, crossed Brown Bear Pass, Relief Valley, Burst Rock, Dodge Ridge and down to Pinecrest, through Twain Harte and finally settled in Tuolumne County.

Jeremiah's party consisted of his wife, Nancy, children William, Mary Adaline, Orlander and Oscar. His brother, Simeon Miller Ballard, and his wife, Emeline Anne Dye Ballard, another brother, Greenberry Henderson Ballard born 1838, and Simeon Ballard were also in the party.

All of their sons died relatively young, and the Ballard Ranch was eventually purchased by Charles Delmar Adams who was raised by the Ballard family and married Lillian Rosasco, raised cattle and panned for gold on and near the property for generations. All that remains of the ranch are the graves within a lovely, ornate metal fence.

It was a great honor to research this family.
