Son of Mary A. Dimond Hurt (1826-1906) and Robert A. Hurt (1821-1904).
Robert was a farmer, lawyer, and justice of the peace in Mason County. He ran a mercantile store called Hurt & Porter in Havana, Ill., in the 1860s.
He owned the Dimond Cemetery land in 1868, when he sold it to J.M. Reason, designating ¼ acre to be a public graveyard.
In 1871, the Hurts moved to Woodson County, Kansas, where Robert served as County Treasurer and dealt in real estate.
They had five more children: Emily J. Morris (1842), Mary F. Orendorff (1846), Augusta "Gussie" Sherman (1860), Agnes "Aggie" Lewis (1866), and John C. (1868).
