Arnold was born and raised in Kentucky and was part of the fourth generation of Combs born in Kentucky. Except for the time he spent in the Army during WWII, he worked his whole life as a coal miner and still found time to do some major gardening, as well as hunting and fishing. He also served as a magistrate in his district and was always thought of as a fair man. A devoted husband, he worked very hard to provide for his family.
