Mary was a daughter of John Downe and his wife Hannah, formerly Bythewood, one of at least two children.
In 1771, Mary Downe married George Golding and they went on to have at least three children: Ann (1773-1774), John (1774-1820) and Mary (1776-1782).
Mary, George's wife and mother of these children, died in 1776, aged 27 years, a week after giving birth to daughter Mary.
This altar tomb, although much weathered, has inscriptions on all sides to close family members, including Mary's parents John and Mary Downe, her daughter Mary Golding, her aunt Frances Bythewood, daughter-in-law Eliza Golding, granddaughter Eliza Forbes Golding. Also included are Mary's husband George Golding and his wives Ann Short and Sarah Symes.
