A private by the name of John Baker was a member of Company I of the 97th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. A large number of Calhoun County men volunteered and served in the 97th Illinois. The John Baker in Company I may have been the same man who was buried at the County Poor Farm, but this has not been confirmed.
All public records indicate that John never married.
At the time of his death, he was around 79-years-old.
