Jose Matsuba was of Japanese origin and his original name was Hichiro Matsuba. He came to Mexico from Japan and became baptized with the name "Jose" in order to marry Refugia through the Catholic church. After marrying, the couple moved to the Old Picacho Village, New Mexico area.
Refugia Alvarez Matsuba died while giving birth to her son, Refugio. One month later, the infant died also.
Josie DiMatteo is a grand daughter.
