I've not had many folks in my life that I would consider heroes. But my grandma, Alice Ada Locke, was at the top of my small list. She was ever cheerful, knew exactly how to make lemonade out of any of life's problems, despite losing a son due to a drunk driver. She and her second husband, "Scotty," adopted five children, raised them to be absolutely wonderful adults and some of them adopted children of their own.
I can't tell you how many times I wish I could pick up the phone just to hear my grandma's voice and get her wise words of counsel.
She sewed like a dream, worked in a fabric shop, volunteered for many years with Tacoma Public Schools and was a huge - I mean the biggest - fan of the Tacoma Tigers/Twins/Cubs. Knew them all on a first-name basis and wore her handmade baseball outfit to every single game.
I have lots of memories sitting in her box eating popcorn and listening to her shout advice to the umpire.
They don't make them like Grandma Alice anymore. I've never met another woman like her and can't seem to achieve what I consider to be her level of greatness in my own life.
But teach me, she did, and in most every major decision I still talk with her and even though I don't hear her answer me, I am pretty sure I hear what she would say:
Don't let the sun set on your wrath.
If you are mad, first scrub the floor.
What will it matter in 100 days?
Spit in one hand, wish in the other and see which fills up the fastest.
Love you, Grandma. Miss you like crazy.
