Henry Graves came to California in 1849 at the age of 19. For work, he drove pack teams to the gold mines. He acquired a squatter's title to land on the northwest edge of the Buttes and began building there in 1852. He married a young widow, Mary Terstegge Darple in 1862. They raised six children there. By 1888 the family had accumulated 4,000 acres and began raising wheat, barley, and sheep. Affiliation with a social/service organization was a measure of one's standing in the community, therefore, Graves was a member of the Pioneer Society, North Butte Grange, and the Good Templars.
