ESTES NEWTON CANTRELL POUND, VA - Mr. Newton Cantrell,92, went to be with the Lord Wednesday September 23, 2015 from his residence after an extended illness.

Newton was a Christian of the Baptist faith, he was a retired UMWA miner and was also a veteran of the United States Army having served during WWII . He was a member of the Pound VFW Post 9600 Honor Guard for many years. He was an All-State basketball player and a member of three state championship basketball teams at Christopher Gist High School.

He enjoyed camping with the family, fishing on the lakes of Virginia and Tennessee and volleyball at Cane Patch . Newton was a loving husband, father, papaw and friend to all he knew.

Newton was preceded in death by his parents, Elzie and Ora (Mullins) Cantrell; sisters, Anita Cantrell, Ova Mullins, Pauline Holiday and Cotella Boggs; brothers, Carrol Cantrell and William (Bill) Cantrell; and daughter-in-law Libby Cantrell.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Muriel (Baker) Cantrell; sons, Denny Cantrell -Pound, VA, Gerald Cantrell and wife Shelia-Jasper, VA, Randall Cantrell-Big Stone Gap, VA and Stacy Cantrell -Pound, VA; four grandchildren, David Cantrell (Felicia)- Pound, VA, Wendy Jordan (Robbie)- Pound, VA, Dakota Cantrell- Pound, VA and Colt Cantrell- Big Stone Gap, VA; one great grandson. Daniel Jordan-Pound, VA; brothers, Ronnie Cantrell and wife Mary-Exenia, OH, Tobby Cantrell and wife Kay-Luray, VA and Richard Cantrell and wife Sandy- Jamestown, OH; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Saturday September 26, 2015 in the Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel with Elder Stacy Potter officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until time of services.

Military Graveside services will be conducted by Pound VFW Post 9600 at 1:00pm Sunday September 27, 2015 at the Baker Cemetery on Bean Gap Road-Pound, VA where sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:00 noon to prepare to go in procession to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Pound Rescue Squad at P O Box 711 Pound, VA 24279 or the charity of your choice. Baker Funeral Home-Pound, VA is serving the family of Estes Newton Cantrell.
