ASHMAN, JOHN. Private, Capt. Samuel Sloper's (12th) co., Col. David Mosley's (3d Hampshire Co.) regt.; enlisted June 12, 1782; discharged June 17, 1782; service, 6 days; marched to Northampton to support the government, June 12, 1782.
(He served in the suppression of
Ely's Rebellion.)

John Ashmun was a son of Amaziah, who was brother of
Justus Ashmun, who were sons of John.

Grave says he died "in the 35th year of his age"; a descendant's DAR application gives birthdate which leads to 34y8m8d.

Inscription:
All assistance with a more thorough/technical description of the grave artistry & inscription is appreciated! Also interested in any explanations of archaic grammar which would allow for the extra periods in the inscription.

(carved in: two grapevines with seven leaves (at least) each and two bunches of grapes each surround the inscription)
(in relief: a bald frowning face flanked by two pin-wheels pointed in opposite directions above the inscription)
