Sixth Earl of Argyll

XXXVI. Colin, the Teach, sixth Earl of Argyll, always distinguished himself by a steady attachme to the cause of King James the Sixth; and having been active in securing to him the full and free admin- istration of the government, when of age to take it into his own hands, his Majesty was pleased to admit him of his Privy Council, anno 1577, and to appoint him Lord High Chancellor, anno 1579, which he executed with the universal approbation of the whole kingdom till his death, anno 1584. He was twice married; first, to Janet Stewart, daughter to Henry, Lord Methven, by whom he had no issue ; secondly, to Agnes, daughter of William Keith, Earl Marischal, and widow of James, Earl of Murray, Eegent of Scotland, by whom he had two sons.

by his last will and testament, he commended his eldest son, Archibald, then a minor, with his whole kin and friends, to the maintenance and protection of the King, in consideration of the faithful services of his predecessors and of his own loyalty. The principal charge of the young Earl and vast estates, was left to his mother, the Countess of Argyle, who was to have the advice and assistance of the six following persons-- viz, DUNCAN CAMPBELL OF GLENURCHY, DOUGAL CAMPBELL OF AUCHINBRECK, JOHN CAMPBELL OF CALDER, SIR JAMES CAMPBELL OF ARDKINLASS, comptroller of the King; ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL OF LOCHNELL, AND NEILL CAMPBELL, BISHOP OF ARGYLE.
