Obituary:

Herbert Craig Chumney, age 80, departed this world for heaven on March 4, 2017, after a lengthy illness with Multiple Sclerosis. He was affectionately called "Craggier" by his sisters and loved ones. Mr. Chumney was born on November 5, 1936 in Lunenburg County, Virginia with parents, Ernest Craig Chumney and Eunice Mae Chumney. Craig mourned the loss of his younger daughter, Katherine, and his wife, Marie Chumney. Craig was formerly married to his high school sweetheart, Goldie Mae Reynolds, with whom he fathered two daughters, Deborah and Catherine. His elder daughter, Deborah Chumney, was a tremendous joy to him and left her home in North Carolina for the last one year and a half, to take care of her "Daddy" during his lengthy illness. Also, His three sisters and their spouses who were very close to him and recently celebrated his 80th birthday are mourning their loss; Phyllis and Joe Walker, Iva and Donnie Ottofaro, and Mary and Michael Lynch.

Craig graduated from Victoria High School, Victoria, Virginia where he was given the title, "playboy of the year." and "best dressed" in the class. Craig was saved during his teenage years by Grace through his faith in Jesus Christ and will be remember by his love of God and God's word. He kept his Bible in his truck to read whenever he was delayed en route to some place. Craig loved to travel and his occupation as a land surveyor gave him much opportunity to work in many places including Florida, Virgin Islands, West Indies and North Carolina. He usually left his "autograph" in all of his work locations. In fact, if you are in Nags Head, NC, you may want to travel to Collington Harbor and find the street, "Craigie Street" for a lovely view. Craig was a history buff, In fact, he liked to quiz his sisters on some trivia to try and catch them citing the wrong answer. He had a lovely, generous, comedic personality and was loved by most everybody. His humor was contagious so much that, when he was telling a funny story, he, himself laughed so hard while telling the story, his relatives thought he was funnier than his story. The funeral service will be conducted at Union Grove Baptist Church on March 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM by Pastor Charles Vaughan. If you would like to view Craig, his body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral service. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is serving the family.
