Nancy Elizabeth Fort Cantwell died January 15, 2015, of natural causes. She was 84. Nancy was born September 29, 1930, in Clarksville, TN, the daughter of Josiah Gill Fort and Elizabeth Mahan Fort. She attended Randolph Macon College and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She married Bradford Chaffin Cantwell of Wilmington on December 19, 1953. They lived in Charleston, S.C., then Wilmington and Wilson before moving to Charlotte. In Charlotte, Nancy volunteered with the Delhom Gallery at the Mint Museum of Charlotte. She collected 18th and 19th century English creamware and published an article on Leeds pottery. She worked in insurance. They moved to Wilmington in 1975 and Nancy worked at Allan Strange Insurance in Wilmington, and then at St. James Parish, where she was financial secretary for many years before retiring. Her interests included calligraphy, decoupage, quilting, knitting and needlepoint, and raising orchids. She loved to read. She was predeceased by her husband, Bradford, in 2000; and her brother, Josiah Fort, in 1955. Survivors include son, Si and wife, Maria; daughters, Theodosia Cantwell Thomson and husband Richard, and grandson Bradford, of Charlotte; and Elizabeth Cantwell Howell, granddaughter Meghan Long and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, January 18, at the home. A memorial service will be held 10:00 am Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. James Episcopal Church with a reception to follow in the Great Hall. The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Francis Memorial Garden, in care of St. James Episcopal Church.
