He was a Corporal in the 17th Kentucky Regiment under the command of Captain Robert Davidson. He enrolled on the 23r dday of October in 1861 and was enlisted in November to serve three years, but was discharged July 12th, 1861 in St. Louis due to a Surgeon' Certificate of Disibaility. He was left in a field hospital in Shiloh with meningitis caught while in the service.It caused his ligaments in his neck to contract. He could open his jaw no more than 3/4s of an inch. He was a teacher, farmer, Magistrate for one term of office, a Baptist, Republication and a candidate for the state legislature. He excelled in growing tobacco and won first remium one year in New Orleans.
