He was the son of Robert and Mary Eades of Rock Creek, Prince George's Parish, Frederick Co., Maryland, and was born in 1764.

There was a Thomas Eades who served in the Revolutionary War from Maryland, but there's no proof that he was the same Thomas Eades. Our Thomas did have an older brother, Charles, who fought for most of the war.

Thomas's family moved from Maryland to Bedford Co., Virginia soon after the war ended.

The Thomas Eades on the Amherst county [adjoins Bedford to the north] tax list in 1785 may have been him or a relative, as this Thomas was listed living very near our Thomas's future father-in-law, John West. This Thomas was listed with three white souls, one house, and seven other buildings [barn, sheds, etc.].

The first definite mention of Thomas in the records was when he witnessed his brother Charles's marriage in Bedford county in 1786.

He married on 11 Aug 1787, Botetourt Co., VA, to Priscilla West. [Botetourt county adjoins Bedford to the west.] She was the daughter of John and Rachel (Perry) West.

In 1788, he and Priscilla were listed on the tax roll in Bedford county with other members of his family.

In 1790, Thomas and Priscilla went west to the Kentucky frontier, along with many other Virginians looking for cheaper land. Thomas' brother John (who married Priscilla's sister Sarah) also came with his new bride, as did Priscilla's parents and family. They settled in Bourbon county, where Thomas was listed on the tax list that year. Priscilla's father was listed the next year.

"The first listing of the surname of Eades / Eds is in the 1790 Tax List of Bourbon County, Kentucky, where Thomas Eads name appears. The next year the name of John Eades is listed, and in 1792 Jonethan Eadds, John Eades, and Thomas Eades, appear on the tax list. Eddes, and John and Thomas Edes appear in 1793. In 1795 the names of Thomas Eades and John Edes are listed. 1796 has three before mentioned with John, Thomas, and William Eades. Which three names appear in 1797 and 1799. [Bourbon County, Kentucky, Taxpayers, 1787-1799. (Miami Beach, Florida: T. L. C. Genealogy, 1990, 1992) Pp. 22, 34, 55, 73, 95, 118, 141, 162. (FHL-USA/CAN 976.9423 R48t.)]

Thomas and Priscilla opened a much-needed tavern and hotel in the tiny but booming town of Paris [then called Bourbonton], Bourbon's county seat. It was only the town's second tavern, the first having been opened by Priscilla's brother, Thomas West. In 1795, Thomas Eades became the first postmaster for the town and set up the post office in the tavern. As postmaster, he would have known all the local residents, including trailblazer Daniel Boone. This tavern still stands and is on the National Historical Register.

In 1796, the famous Cane Ridge Meeting House Gospel revival was held a few miles out of town. No doubt Thomas and Priscilla found an opportunity to attend. Everyone else did.

In 1810, Thomas and Priscilla were listed on the Bourbon county census with their nine children. They held no slaves.

War of 1812 - Thomas may have been too young to fight in the Revolutionary War, but he didn't think he was too old to fight in 1812. He enlisted as a Private and fought alongside his son Horace and two of his future sons-in-law, brothers James and Granville Rutherford.

1813 - A Thomas Eades was sued in St. Genevieve Co., Missouri Territory, and it's possible this was the same Thomas, as his daughter Martha with her husband James Rutherford would be in St. Louis, MO by 1817:

In 1820, they were listed on the Bourbon Co., KY census with eight children still at home.

In 1827, Thomas and Priscilla sold their land in Bourbon county and moved across the line into Nicholas county. The deed was copied in Allen county, where the buyer lived:

Allen Co., KY - Deed Book D 1826-1831
Pg 48-49 This Indenture made this sixth day of March one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven between THOS. EADES and his wife PRISCILLA of the county of Bourban and state of Kentucky of the one part and RICHARD MITCHEL of Allen County and state aforesaid ... in consideration of the sum of one hundred & fifteen dollars ... confirm unto the sd RICHARD MITCHEL ... tract of land containing one hundred & thirty three achors (sic) ... on Baysfork a branch of Big Barren river ... Wit: ASA B. EADES, GRANVILLE O. EADES Signed: THOS. EADES, PRISCILLA EADES

It's not known exactly when Priscilla died. Her tombstone (or her daughter's?) death date seems to read 1815, but she was definitely still alive when she signed the land deed in 1827 and probably in 1830 when Thomas had a wife her age on the census.

In 1830, they were enumerated on the census in Nicholas Co., KY, still with a full house:

Thomas died in 1838 in Nicholas Co., KY. His death was described many years later in his daughter Rachel Rutherford's biography: "Her father went to the nearest [long blotch - illegible] his horse, and, being famished, called for a drink of water in front of the store. He drank it and fell on the side-walk, dying before he could be carried into the store."

He was buried next to Priscilla in the Old Millersburg cemetery in Bourbon county.
