WILLMAR Richard E. Earl, 87, of Willmar, formerly of Edina, died Tuesday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Richard Earl Aug. 2, 1923 March 15, 2011

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Grove Lake Cemetery, rural Sedan, with military honors by American Legion Post 167.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and for one hour prior to the service Monday.

Richard was born Aug. 2, 1923, at Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis, the son of Andrew and Teckla (Hokanson) Earl. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Washburn High School in 1942. He enlisted into the United States Navy, serving on the USS Cascade during World War II. Richard was honorably discharged on Dec. 31, 1945, and returned to Minneapolis.

On March 24, 1946, he was united in marriage to Nancy Whittemore at Union Congregational Church in Glenwood. Following their marriage, they moved to Minneapolis where Richard was living at the time and began their life together. Richard worked as a painter for J.B. Nelson. He was a member of the Painter's Union for more than 60 years. They built several homes in the south metro area, finally settling in Edina. Richard and Nancy moved to Willmar in 2005.

Richard was a member of Normandale Lutheran Church where he ushered, was active with Men's Bible Study, and as co-leader of Boy Scout Troop 198. He also had the privilege of painting the chapel at Normandale Lutheran Church. After settling in Edina, he was a member of Colonial Church and upon moving to Willmar became a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

He loved golfing, fishing and hunting; but most of all, he cherished attending all of his grandchildren's events. He also enjoyed watching the Vikings, Twins and enjoyed waterskiing well into his 60s. Richard will be remembered as a man of unwavering strength, steadiness and honesty who also had a wonderful and yet dry sense of humor.

Surviving are his children, Richard (and Teresa) Earl of Plymouth, Elizabeth (and Gary) Wyffels of Willmar; eight grandchildren, Michael, Rachel and David Earl; Ashley and Alyssa Wyffels; Leslie, Erick and Matthew Earl; and his brother, Robert (and Doris) Earl of Eden Prairie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy in 2008; and son, Steven in 1988.
