Deceased Name: JOYCE VILES, 68, HELPED CATALOG SEBAGO CEMETERIES
Joyce E. Viles, 68, died April 17, 2000, at her home on Hancock Pond Road after a brief illness.
Along with her sister, she was active in preserving the history of the town's cemeteries. Together they cataloged the gravestones at all of the town's 45 cemeteries over the last two years. It had been done once before in 1964.
"We went to all 45 cemeteries and updated all the information," said her sister, June Allen of Sebago. "We went gravestone to gravestone marking down what was on every one of them."
"They used to call us the cemetery ladies," her sister said. "We also worked on the town cemetery committee when it was formed."
Mrs. Viles was born here, a daughter of Merle and Doris Weed Douglass, attended local schools and in 1948 graduated from Potter Academy.
Her family has roots eight generations deep in town, and many members of her family now live near each other on Hancock Pond Road.
"She was born and brought up here and educated here," her sister said. "I guess it was just understood she would always come back."
In 1948, she married Richard T. Viles. They lived in Falmouth and Mrs. Viles worked at the North Gate Pharmacy.
From 1979 to 1987, they lived in Manila, Ark., prior to moving to Sebago.
While in Sebago, she was a member of the Sebago Center Community Church and the Ladies Circle. She was a 50-year member of the Maplegrove Grange in Sebago, the Potter Academy Alumni Association, the Sebago Historical Society and the Falmouth Temple of Pythian Sisters.
She was president of the Babb Cemetery Association, and was involved in establishing the new Sebago Cemetery.
Her husband died in 1987. A son, Merle Ray Viles, also died previously.
Surviving are two sons, Richard E. Viles and Keith Taylor Viles, both of Sebago; a daughter, Lauris Champagne of Sebago; a brother, Clayton Douglass of Sebago; a sister, June Allen of Sebago; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
There are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Babb Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Young officiating. Arrangements are by York Funeral Chapel, Cornish.
