He was the son of the late Reece Kermit and Bernice Dixie Ballance of Hatteras.
David was survived by his loving wife, Joan Auld Ballance and his chocolate lab, Duke. He was also survived by his children, Wendy Paulson and husband Kris of Lynchburg, Va., Jimmy Gower and wife Kim of Virginia Beach, Nicolle Pantazoglou and husband Dimitry of Florida and Ashley Williams and husband Rusty of North Carolina.
Also surviving are three sisters, Karen Rogers and husband Bob of Reedville, Va., Lovie Fortune and husband Ricky and Cindy Fullerton and husband Todd, all of Virginia Beach. David had four nephews, three nieces, three great nephews and two great-nieces.
David was a partner in Shaddaeu Roofing and Construction Company of Norfolk. He retired as general manager and secretary/treasurer after 41 years. David was a member of the Virginia Association of Roofing Contractors.
David enjoyed LIFE. His greatest loves were his wife Joanie and their chocolate lab Duke. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and listening to country music in Hatteras from his home, Shallow Bay Point.
David loved being surrounded by his family and friends. He spent many days sitting on his deck talking about the old times and creating new ones. David has always been a mentor to the present and younger generations. He will truly be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Hatteras United Methodist Church in Hatteras. A celebration of life will follow the service.
