CARTER, Hylan Quinten Sr., of Salem, went home to glory on Monday, April 16, 2001. He was born in Salem, Va., the son of the late Walter A. Carter, Sr. and Beatrice Willis Carter. He served his country in the U. S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Walter, Jr. and Margurite Carter, brothers, Aaron "Sonny" Carter and Kyle, his granddaughter, Tina Preston, his nephews, Walter, III "Bunny" Carter and Terry Carter. Those left to cherish his memory are his faithful wife of fifty-five years, Pauline L. Carter; five daughters, Billie (John) Perdue, Roanoke, Linda (Joseph, Sr.) Preston, Roanoke, Debra (Johnny) Walker of North Carolina, Carolyn (David, Sr.) Price and Barbara Carter of Georgia; two sons, Hylan, Jr. (Valerie) Carter, Richmond and James Carter, Salem; two sisters, Zipporah Carter ad Gayle (Tyrone) Surrency, both of New York; three sisters-in-law, Altma Brown, Brown, Roanoke, Eula Brown, Salem and Inetha Carter of Detroit; two brothers-in-law, Arthur (Fern) Brown of Maryland and Durant Brown, Newport News; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a special niece, Starr Carter. Funeral services will be 12 noon Saturday, April 21, 2001 at Big Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Thomas A. Penn will officiate and interment will be in Big Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, one hour prior to the service. Friends may call at Hamlar-Curtis on Wednesday for viewing. Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
