A Finnish athlete who won gold in the Intercalated Games in Athens in 1906. These are no longer recognised as Olympic Games. Initially he was a top wrestler but he switched to athletics, particularly the throwing events. He won his gold medal in the Greek-style discus, then in the same event in the London Olympics of 1908 he won a bronze medal. His sons achieved even more glory for the family. Matti won a gold medal for the javelin in 1932; Kalle set a European record for the shot put; and Aki set a world record in the decathlon.
