DR. LEON ERNEST COLEMAN, born May 29, 1929, departed this life on January 14,2004 at his home in Halifax, VA. He was seventy-four years old. Dr. Coleman was the son of the late Reverend Dr. Lee Ernest Coleman and Annie Walker Coleman. Leon professed Christ at an early age and joined the Banister Hill Baptist Church in Halifax, VA, of which his father was pastor for many years. He received his elementary and high school education in Charlotte County and Halifax County. Upon graduation from high school, he attended A&T College in Greensboro, NC where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Science and later, a Master of Arts degree in Education. He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania and Nova University of Florida from which he received his Doctorate in Education and Administration. Dr. Coleman taught science at Mary Bethune High School in Halifax for three years, after which he served for thirty five years in the Baltimore City Public School System in Maryland. Upon retirement as principal in Baltimore, he returned to Halifax, VA where he could live peacefully and quietly. Leon organized the "Halifax/South Boston Seniors Club" with over thirty members joining. His vision was to promote the general welfare of senior citizens. This was accomplished by inviting guest speakers to discuss current issues, facilitating "wisdom sharing" among club members, and by organizing social events. The club has been an overwhelming success; it was his "joy". Leon leaves to cherish precious memories, his wife of forty-six years: Lottie Tucker Coleman; one son; Leon B. Coleman, Jr.; four daughters; Ditra Lynn Coleman, Vicki Coleman, Gail Coleman-Terry and Joy Coleman; one daughter-in-law, Kim Coleman; one son-in-law, Gregory Terry; three grandchildren, LaShell and Winter Coleman, and Sydni Terry; one sister, Sallie Coleman Thomas; three sisters-in-law, Marie T. Walker, Marilyn Tucker, and Mrs. Charlie Coleman; three brothers-in-law, John Thomas, Waverly Walker, and John Tucker; and a host of nephews and nieces.
